Blackheads (some are yellow) are a wide opening on the skin with a blackened mass of dirt that covers the pour opening. This type of acne forms when dead skin is stuck in a pore with excess oil and bacteria.
Blackheads are caused by increased hormone levels which stimulates the sebaceous gland, causing oil to form in the glands. Once the oil is formed, it allows for excess skin cells to get stuck in the pores. It's often from poor exfoliation, the use of occlusive products or makeup that clogs pores.
Should you pick at blackheads?
NO! Leave blackheads to be professionally removed — if you try picking at them yourselves, you will often cause scaring or tear tissues that will make the pours irritated and permanent.
